Do you ever wonder how to enjoy the simple things in life when your mind is constantly going in a million directions?

I’m referring to the little things that mean the most!

Like jumping on the trampoline with your kiddos and hearing their giggles.

Or, laying outside on a blanket to enjoy the blue sky and beautiful weather.

We get too damn busy to enjoy the simple things in life that bring the most joy.

Often times, the most precious moments are right in front of us.

Sadly, we get so damn busy with life that we forget to appreciate the little things that bring us the most joy!

Most everyone has a tendency to feel stressed and focus on the negative things going on in their world.

And as mentioned above, even though there is a whole pile of goodness occurring on the other side.

” Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things”

-Robert Brault

I’ll be the first to admit that I sometimes allow my work and the fast paced world that we live in overtake my thoughts and energy until I finally tell myself to STOP!

Everyday, I feel like I answer 500 questions and solve everyone’s problems.

I cry with my patients, try to solve their problems, and carry the weight of their health on my shoulders.

And then, I have all the tasks that go along with being a busy ass mom.

I try to multi-task a million different things, working on long term goals, homework, and taking care of my parents when they have a hundred questions about the same medication.

And, yes, I also have a tendancy to get consumed with social media, tik tok, and netflix on my phone. Who doesn’t?!

But, when I allow my mind to come back to reality, I see the simple things in life that are going on and appreciate the joy that it brings.

To enjoy the simple things in life for me most often includes my family and friends.

I see how fast my kids are growing up and often times catch myself trying to remember them as infants.

It makes me sad to realize how fast their little life is moving. And so, I now try to savor every moment that I can.

My parents, while they are still kicking it like rockstars, aren’t getting any younger and I think about my friends whom have already lost their parents.

As I know how fast each day goes, I do my best to going home to the family farm.

It is always quite entertaining at Ayecock Hill I might add.

And my friends, I know that I’m the luckiest human alive to have 500 best friends (as my dad use to say).

But seriously, I have a great group of friends and we always do our best to have last minute gatherings with and without kids.

I grew up with a big group of close, family friends and I want that same experience for mine.

It is so good for the soul!

Get away from what is stealing your joy.

By getting away, I don’t mean quit your job and move to a long, lost destination. Trust me, your problems would become much more grande.

I mean, take a moment for you to recharge and enjoy what is around you.

Some enjoy going for a Saturday morning hike, while others just want to be alone for 24 hours.

That sounds like a busy ass mom’s dream!

For me, living the crazy life as a Family Nurse Practitioner, finding my joy usually means escaping to our farm or to the lake.

This is where I feel the most relaxed and as if I have no responsibility whatsoever.

Well, I guess I have to still feed and protect my kids some. Ha!

We enjoy the simple things in life on the farm.

If you know us Berry’s, you will understand how spontaneous our life is. We may decide on a Saturday morning to pack up and go somewhere. Or, we may go from the idea of painting our kitchen to remodeling our whole downstairs. (That’s for another story).

This past weekend we decided to head to ‘the library’ after soccer games.

Why on earth would we want to go to the library on a Saturday and with our kids?

Well, this is not your typical library.

Instead, it is what we call our farm house.

When first built, my husband decided to name it kind of after a bar in my southern home town, The Office.

Only, he chose ‘the library’ so that his friends could tell the wives that’s where they were going.

Sucks for him they all know it means the farm, or as the boys like to think of it as the man cave.

But, this is where we escapt to enjoy the simple things in life.

Nature is one of God’s biggest blessings!

Our farm has one of the most beautiful sceneries!

It sets on 150 acres with beautiful trees, 10 acre pond, goats, chickens, cows, a horse, and donkey named Esther.

We get to enjoy time with the kids outdoors, fishing and riding 4-wheelers.

And brings peace knowing that they can run free without the worry of getting lost or kidnapped.

This past weekend, Campbell and his buddy Max had a blast. They stayed covered in mud and fished sunrise to sunset.

Max (5) even caught a big fish and that was a huge excitement for us all.

It was so peaceful to sit and do nothing, especially in these awesome fold up chairs that my friend brought! They were so relaxing and super convenient. I have already bought some for myself.

I got to enjoy a book while fishing and listen to nature, as well as two little boys’ constant giggles.

We did forget to sunscreen everyone, though. OOPS!

And my arms became as red as an apple. Luckily, I had some goat’s milk lotion and thought, what the heck.

I was amazed at how fast it took the burn and redness out!

At night, the kids played pool or shuffleboard while the grown-ups set by the fire outside, enjoying the fellowship and several cocktails.

Moments like theses are what brings me the most joy.

It is a simple, low key act that brings so much enjoyment to my life.

I get to step away from reality for a short time, re-charge my mind, and savor the time spent with my family.

In other words, this is how I enjoy the simple things in life!

Tips to finding your joy in life.

SUCCESS magazine wrote a great article explaining ’11 Simple Ways to Find Joy in Your Everyday Life’.

In this article, the staff writers provided simple suggestions that can lead a big impact on how you find your joy, purpose, and happiness!

So, let’s take a look at what they suggest.

STOP WAITING TO BE HAPPY!

I’m going to shout an AMEN to this! So many of us are constantly looking for happiness. Instead of enjoying the opportunities that arise today, we think that something may be greener on the other side. It doesn’t always happen that way.

By shifting to a positive mindset and seeing what you have now, you are more likely to witness better health, more success, and avenues of happiness, even if nothing changes.

ADD HAPPINESS TO YOUR LIFE RIGHT NOW

I know how easy it is to let our worries and stress overtake our emotional well-being to the point of stealing our happiness and joy.

It’s called life. While there are wonderful things that lay ahead, we need to allow happiness flow within now. Life is short and when don’t allow ourselves to live life to the fullest, what do we get to enjoy? Nothing.

MAKE SELF CARE PART OF YOUR ROUTINE

Taking a time out for YOU is hugely important.

There are a variety of ways that you can reset for your mental and emotional well-being. Such as, reading a book, going for a walk, meditation, journaling, or pampering yourself with a massage.

One of my favorite things to do when I need to just focus on me is taking a hot bath with a glass of wine and goat’s milk soap.

I realize that this sounds weird, but goat’s milk has huge benefits on nourishing your skin and helping to relax.

FIND A JOYFUL STATE OF MIND

Pay more attention to the things that bring you joy and happiness.

By living a joyful life, you are more productive, gain high hopes in your future, and learn to enjoy the simple things which have the most meaning.

STOP WORRYING

One thing I’m always telling patients is to ‘bless and release’.

There are so many things that occur in life, whether it be stressing about the unknown or worrying what someone may think about you.

News flash-there will be people that don’t like you and that’s ok.

Who cares!

You only have control of your thoughts, actions, and emotions. It is a process in forming this new habit of not worrying over the things you have no control over. Take one day at a time, focus on the positve, and remind yourself to be happy. These thoughts will eventually control your brain chemistry, leading to less worry.

APPRECIATE THE SMALL THINGS

There are so many things that happen daily that we take for granted. You may not realize it because it’s not what you are hoping for or it may not seem that important.

However, if you stop to see the true meaning of what is going on in front of you, there may be more happiness and joy already taking place.

This goes especially when it comes to raising kids. We get so busy with working, homework, after school activities, and keeping up with home chores. Sadly, this often times prevents us from enjoying all of the craziness until it is too late. Time flies and so do our kids. I already can’t believe mind are about to be 9 and 7.

I’m now doing my best to enjoy the simple things in life which means every moment I have with my kids.

And instead of allowing stress to overcome my happiness, I’m trying to remind myself that I will miss this one day!

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH POSITIVE PEOPLE

Have you ever worked with someone or been in a relationship that leaves you feeling life has been sucked out of you? And, while you care for them dearly, you just want to yell SHUT THE HELL UP?!

I know I do!

The people that you surround yourself with can have an enormous impact on your happiness and success.

For instance, someone that is always finding the negative side of situations or one that constantly talks ugly about others.

This can effect your entire mood and surroundings.

Instead, surround yourself with others that also like to enjoy the simple things in life. These may enjoy focusing on the positive side or finding the best qualities in others. They encourage instead of pull you down and they help in supporting your dreams and desires.

As the Success staff discovered in researching this topic, “positive social connection is the greatest predictor long-term happiness”.

LAUGH MORE

You may not realize this, but laughter can often times be the best medicine for happiness.

I can have an impact on reducing stress, making relationships stronger, and increasing blood flow.

Laughter brings the desire to being surrounded by fun, positive people. It allows you to enjoy both the big things as well as the little things in life.

LOVE MORE

How often do you call a friend just to say ‘I love you’? If not very often, I challenge you to do this more.

Take it from me!

I’ve lost several close friends at a young age and will forever hold regrets to not calling to say hi when I had recently thought about them. I allowed the craziness of life control my happiness.

To love someone doesn’t mean it has to be a relationship.

It can be a special thing you do with your kids every night or carving out time to love on yourself!

My bestie, Fara, is great about sending random cards in the mail just because. It is still exciting to get fun mail from a friends just to say I love you.

This is one thing I need to be better about doing myself.

If you know me, I’m always telling people I love them and a huge hugger!

And yes, COVID sucked away this part of happiness from me as well.

But, I always make a point now to tell people how much I love them.

You can hear me telling my patients, co-workers, family, friends, and maybe even my favorite store owner that assists with my retail therapy.

FIND BLISS IN A BUCKET LIST

Creating a bucket list doesn’t have to be as extreme as going to Italy one day. Although, that would be amazing.

It can be collecting something from all of the U.S. states or hiking the tallest mountain with your family.

Whatever it may be, the goal is to live in that moment so that you can enjoy the simple things in life.

It brings a sense of happiness, success, and a triumph that has been conquered.

Life is short so start making a bucket list if you haven’t already. Start small and experience the sense of accomplishment as you mark things off the list.

PLAN YOUR HAPPINESS

Now, I know you may be thinking how on earth do you plan your happiness. You live with the stress of bills and the fear of illness.

But, what you may not realize is that happiness can come in various forms. By choosing to focus on positivity, you prevent stress and worry, which impacts your overall health.

This aides in planning for better health, clearer focus on career goals, and happiness in the simpler things, for example.

Being positive can also impact a happy marriage as well as certain views in todays world.

To enjoy the simple things in life is also one of the most important things in life.

We are on this earth for only a short time and how you spend this life is up to you.

You can choose to enjoy the simple things in life, allow yourself to experience love, and appreciate the people around you.

Or you can live in a world of chaos, worry, and regret.

I challenge you allow yourself to see how the simple things in life can turn into the most important. You will begin to experience more joy, purpose, and happiness then ever imagined.

That, my friend, is what life is all about!
